Painting the body, identity and emotion

I am Sofia Laskari.

My work explores emotion, personal experience and the female perspective through figurative painting. I often use my own features as a recurring character rather than a literal self-portrait, using the body to speak about identity, vulnerability and memory. At the same time, I’m interested in representing women through a female gaze and challenging ideas about femininity, beauty and the body that have become culturally normalised.

Double Nature, 2026

Oil on unstretched canvas, 270cm x 200cm

Double Nature explores two sides of femininity and the constant fight within oneself. Two female figures, both based on my own features, embody strength and softness, dominance and vulnerability. The work also draws on my personal history with boxing and carries the memory of my first boxing coach, who passed away at the beginning of 2026.
