BODY AND FLESH
Main series
Artist Statement
Exploring body and flesh became as exciting as discovering character through facial features. As a portrait artist I have come to an understanding that the skin and body can reveal as much of a person’s story as their face, pushing me to continuously dive into the exploration of body positions and skin colours in my artistic practice. However, I have seen a significant challenge in the expression of self-portrait in such open and exposed way. I have discovered that painting the female nude is still heavily constrained by societal norms. Witnessing the negative commentary and criticism directed towards depiction of female nakedness, I have reached an understanding that my work holds a profound impact on those around me. And this realization has given me more desire to influence society’s perception of the female body, shifting the focus from sexualization to the exploration of intense emotions and unique skin tone. I am happy my practice can be related to artist that I grasp inspiration from the most, such as Jenny Saville, whose works also received a lot of condemnation. Her approach inspired me to continue creating “triggering” imagery that challenges the public perspective and surpasses the stereotypical representation of a female body. My aim is for viewers to sence the vulnerability of the figures and connect with the emotions that resonates within everyone, but often left unexpressed. By employing gentle and comforting skin tones, I intend for the viewer’s gaze to perceive naked bodies with the same acceptance and ease as they would perceive clothed figures. With each new work of my ongoing body series, I am eager to witness not only the evolution of my personal perspective but also the transformative power that my art has. And I truly hope that my work would inspire women to express themselves and their bodies with freedom and in the most natural way.
